BERTINORO - CODE: TEDBRTN

Le donne e' cavalier, li affanni e li agi

che ne'nvogliava amore e cortesia

là dove i cuor son fatti sì malvagi.

O Bretinoro, ché non fuggi via,

poi che gita se n'é la tua famiglia

e molta gente per non esser ria?

(Pg., canto XIV)

With its magnificent view of the sea and hills, Bertinoro is also called "The Balcony of Romagna". It's a medieval village which has preserved its original style with its ancient cobbled streets and breathtaking views.

Piazza della Libertà with its magnificent Palazzo Ordelaffi, the Clock Tower and the millenary Rocca on top of the hill, excellently renovated and hosting nowadays the University Residential Center, illustrate still today the important history of this village.

Here you also find the Colonna delle Anella (Ring Column), the symbol of the famous tradition of hospitality. It dates back to the 13th century  and it was erected by  the noble families in an attempt to pacify the quarrelling families of Bertinoro who were competiting to offer hospitality to wayfarers arriving to town. By tying his horse to one of the twelve rings, each corresponding to a Bertinoro family, the pilgrim would identify the family he would stay in.

The Rocca hosts the Museo Interreligioso (Interreligious Museum), a cultural jewel dedicated to the three monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) which deeply marked the history, culture and identity of the Mediterranean people.

Another location not to be missed in the surrounding area is thePieve di S. Donato in Polenta, a Romanesque parish church which dates back to the 10th century and which was made famous by the poet Giosuè Carducci who, in his ode “La Chiesa di Polenta” (The Church of Polenta), recalls the hospitality received  by Dante Alighieri,on his way from Arezzo to Ravenna, from the local family of Guido da Polenta.

Bertinoro is one of the most suitable hilly areas for wine growing in the Emilia Romagna region. The most famous excellent wines produced here are the deep ruby red coloured Sangiovese and the golden Albana which can be be tasted in the various wineries spread around the area.

Below the square, you can visit the museum “Sapere di Vino” (a few panels illustrating how Bertinoro is connected to the world of wines), the Historical Archive of Romagna Sangiovese, the Enoteca CA’ DE BÉ with its beautiful Albana Bell, created to celebrate the DOCG recognition to Albana Sangiovese wine (1987).

At the food of the medieval village there is a hamlet called Fratta Terme with its Spas, unique for their variety of water which are at the base of all the health and wellbeing treatments of the Spa Center.

The Municipality of Bertinoro is a very large area that stretches from the piedmont to the plain and offers beautiful landscapes and breathtaking views.

Several routes leading out of the town can be covered by foot, by bicycle or MTB.

Besides the Spa center you can find the adventure park Indiana Park, with adventourous paths for everyone
