LORD BYRON and Teresa…“the last passion” - 4 days - CODE: ISLB

 

1st day RAVENNA 

Free arrival in Ravenna and accommodation. Free lunch. Early in the afternoon, meeting with a specialized guide on Byron’s life for a pedestrian tour to discover the area of Silence where are important places related to the story and the death of Dante Alighieri. Byron and Dante shared a common destiny: exile. The visit will continue at the Classense Library, an ancient monastery of the Camaldolese order, inside which jealously preserved objects that trace the love affair between the poet and Countess Teresa Gamba. Dinner and overnight.

 

2nd day RAVENNA 

Meeting with the guide and visit of the most famous and interesting monuments of the city, known for the splendor of the mosaics that decorate them: Church of San Vitale, Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Neonian Baptistery. Free lunch. In the afternoon the tour continues with a visit to the Basilica of S. Apollinare Nuovo, the Teatro Alighieri created by the Venetian Meduna brothers, and with the collection of Dante-themed mosaics "Tra Inferno e Paradiso" kept at the Tamo Museum. Dinner and overnight.

 

3rd day RAVENNA/POMPOSA/CA’ ZEN 

Departure by bus to Cà Zen. Along the Romea road, stop at Pomposa to visit the grandiose abbey complex that was owned by Count Alessandro Guiccioli, husband of Teresa Gamba of whom Byron was in love. Arrival at Cà Zen in the late morning. Lunch in the charming 18th century Villa, one of the favorite places where the two lovers often met secretly. Afternoon: tour by vintage carriage or, alternatively, by boat on the river Po. Declamation of poems "Stanzas to Po". In the evening return to Ravenna. Free dinner and overnight.

 

4th day RAVENNA 

After breakfast and check out, transfer by bus to the Mausoleum of Theodoric, for a visit to the architectural masterpiece of the gothic king Theoderic, then to the site of Classe to dedicate a visit to the monumental cemetery Basilica consecrated to the patron saint of Ravenna, Sant ' Apollinaris. Before leaving the city of Ravenna, we propose a short visit to the Pinewood of Classe (only in case of good weather) a place that has been an inexhaustible source of inspiration for both Byron and Dante Alighieri. The visit will end with a reading of some verses composed by the poet. End of services.
