Itinerario n. 7 – DANTE TOUR

Firenze, Gargonza, Poppi, Camaldoli, Dante Train, Faenza, surroundings of Forlì, Ravenna

08 days / 07 nights

 

1st Day – FLORENCE

Arrival in Florence, transfer to hotel, dinner and overnight.

 

2nd Day – FLORENCE

Full day guided tour of Florence. In Dante's time, Florence was certainly not as we see it today. It was a medieval city with narrow streets. It will be only at the end of the century that will begin work on a few large architectural projects that still shape the image of Florence. The first stone of the Church of Santa Maria Novella was laid in May 1279. We will also visit the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the only one existing in Dante's time, the Dante's House (now Museum) and Church of Santa Margherita also known as the Church of Dante and Beatrice, where she is buried. In this way you can experience the Florentine years of Dante, from youth to exile. Dinner and overnight.

 

3rd Day - CASTELLO of GARGONZA and MONTE SAN SAVINO

A full day excursion in Gargonza, a small walled village surrounded by nature in the Val di Chiana. Visit the castle where Dante was a guest in 1303, soon after the exile and where the meeting between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines exiled from Florence took place. Visit Monte Savino located a few kilometers from Gargonza, well-preserved medieval town with a historic center and the beautiful church St. Augustine noteworthy. Free lunch. Dinner and overnight.

 

4th Day - POPPI and CAMALDOLI

Excursion to Poppi, guided tour to his castle where Dante lived for almost a year during which, they say, has composed a canto. Free lunch. Transfer to the monastery of Camaldoli (10 km.) and guided tour of the Hermitage. Inside a chapel dedicated to St. Romuald: " Qui è Maccario, qui è Romualdo, qui son li frati miei che dentro ai chiostri, fermar li piedi e tennero il cor saldo”. (Paradiso, XXII canto). Dinner and overnight.

 

5th Day - FLORENCE and FAENZA

Transfer to railway station. Departure to Faenza with the century-old “Dante Train” line. Free lunch. Visit the International Museum of Ceramics, one of the largest in the world and Milzetti Palace, historic neoclassical building, now a Museum in Romagna. Dinner and overnight.

 

6th Day – SURROUNDINGS OF FORLI’

Departure to Bertinoro and visit the Ordelaffi Palace, Lords of Forlì, where Dante went in early 1300. Arrival to Polenta and visit the ancient Pieve di San Donato in pre-Romanesque style. Free lunch and then depart for Portico di Romagna, a medieval village. Visit the Church of the Company,  the Bridge of the Majesty and the Portinari Palace belonged to the father of Beatrice. Dinner and overnight.

 

7th Day - RAVENNA

Transfer to Ravenna, the city where Dante, finding asylum at the court of Guido Novello da Polenta spent the last years of his life. Visit of Galla Placidia, the Basilica of San Vitale, Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Palace of the Da Polenta and the home of Francesca: "siede la terra dove nata fui, su la marina dove 'l Po discende, per aver pace coi seguaci suoi" (Inferno, V canto). Free lunch. Dinner and overnight.

 

8th Day – RAVENNA

In the morning visit to the Tomb of Dante, to Quadrarco of Braccioforte where in 1865 were found the remains of Dante and the Basilica of St. Francis where he held his funeral. End of services.
